Common Gutter Problems

Published by Andrew Schmidt

Did you know that aluminum gutters on average can last at least 20 to 30 years? Gutters made of copper can last even longer. They won’t reach their full lifetime if you don’t take proper care and maintenance precautions. Here are a few ways things can go wrong if you don’t check your gutters regularly.

Debris accumulation:

  • Loose debris may begin to decompose, compressing into a solid sheet as it becomes wet, causing gutter clogs.
  • Clogged gutters caused by debris accumulation can also be a fire hazard.
  • Debris in your gutters accelerates wear, and backs water up under the shingles, causing roof damage.
  • It may also cause water to overflow onto the ground around the home or building.

Common causes of gutter damage:

  • Leaning ladders against the gutters to clean them
  • Seams splitting apart
  • Ice formation
  • Pest infestations
  • Stains caused by constant overflowing and rusting spikes
  • Storm or tree damage

Damage to your gutters should be taken seriously and addressed as soon as possible. If your gutters become damaged, it can cause a lot of other damage to your home, such as:

  • Flooding in the basement
  • Cracks in the foundation
  • Soil erosion
  • Dry-rot on fascia boards, soffit and roof
  • Paint damage
  • Window, door and siding damage
  • Mold damage
  • Fire damage in dry areas with high winds

Your gutters should be cleaned out no less than two times each year to prevent any clogging or other damage. If you have a lot of trees surrounding your home, you should clean them more frequently.
